Sunday School (Grades K-5)

Welcome to St. Peter’s Sunday School Program!

IMG_2827[1]Our Sunday School Program is a dynamic and engaging beginning to your child’s faith formation years.  We offer sections of each grade level to meet your child’s needs.

The PreK – 5th grade classes meet on most Sunday mornings at St. Peter Catholic School from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM. Class sizes are typically 10 – 12 students per Catechist.

Younger grades also include an Aide in the classroom to help engage the children and support the Catechist. These classes are taught in a traditional classroom setting.

Sunday School Curriculum

IMG_2817[1]We use the Loyola Press series: Finding God: Our Response to God’s Gifts
Know Your Faith. Grow in Faith. Go in Faith.

This comprehensive program provides sound doctrine, scripture, tradition, and prayer through experiential activities that make these essential lessons part of a lifelong practice of faith.

It was suggested in light of the Synod recommendations and brain storming on how to engage some parents with children in Sunday School- we have “class masses” or actually “grade masses” where children can do the readings, prayers of the faithful, participate in offertory procession.

Sacraments

The Catechism of the Catholic Church articulates that “the sacraments of Christian initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist – lay the foundation of every Christian life”, and pronounces that, “the faithful are born anew in Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life” (1212).

All baptized are invited to participate in preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, First Reconciliation is to precede First Eucharist. If your child has not been baptized please contact our DRE/Pastoral Associate, Paul Rogers.

Catechesis for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist begins in first grade. This formation, in addition to attending Mass and preparation at home, provides the foundation for these sacraments. More specific information about preparation for each of these sacraments is provided below.

Reconciliation

Reconciliation is celebrated weekly at St. Peter Catholic Church. Reconciliation services are also provided within our Sunday School class time throughout the year for Grades 3-5.  If your child is in Grade 3 or above, has not celebrated First Reconciliation, and would like to do so, please contact DRE/Pastoral Associate Paul Rogers.

First Reconciliation

First Reconciliation is traditionally celebrated in Grade 2. Preparation includes the following:

  • Enrollment in our Sunday School Program or St. Peter Catholic School at least one year prior to the reception of the sacrament.
  • Participation in all aspects of the preparation program, including: classroom catechesis, parent meetings and the mandatory First Reconciliation review session.
  • Active family membership at St. Peter Catholic Church.
  • Weekly attendance at Sunday Mass.

The First Reconciliation Parent meeting is held in the fall of each year and the sacrament itself is typically celebrated in November each year. The 2016-2017 Sunday School Calendar is coming soon – check back often!

Because the Church draws her life from the Eucharist, the source and summit of Christian life, participation in the Sunday Eucharist is essential to you and your child/ren’s faith life. If your child is in third grade or above, has not celebrated First Eucharist, and would like to do so, please contact the DRE/Pastoral Associate, Paul Rogers.

First Communion

First Communion is traditionally celebrated in second grade. Preparation includes the following expectations:

  • Enrollment in our Sunday School Program or St. Peter Catholic School, at least one year prior to the reception of the sacrament.
  • Participation in all aspects of the preparation program, including: classroom catechesis, parent meetings, and the First Communion Mini-Retreat.
  • Active family membership at St. Peter Catholic Church.
  • Weekly attendance at Sunday Mass.

The first communion parent meeting is typically held in the spring of each year and the sacrament is typically celebrated in May each year. The 2016-2017 Sunday School Calendar is coming soon – check back often!
